Kitchen Issues

We are starting to work out more of the details for the kitchen. To start with, we had a few little issues that we had to work through.

Issue #1: The microwave/vent hood is huge and ugly, leaving the small stove very crowded.

We decided that we are going to replace the microwave/vent hood with a plain vent hood. This change should make this whole area look bigger. We are also replacing the 30" electric coil cooktop with a 36" glass cooktop. We would love to do a big gas cooktop, but getting a gasline put in to the kitchen is out of our budget.

Issue #2: The desk area on the end of the kitchen is pretty much useless space and, even worse, is sagging.

To fix this problem, our friend Arthur is going to build bookshelves to go under the glass cabinets. The shelves will be as deep as the cabinets and will hopefully look like part of the cabinet system. These shelves will hold the microwave (a small, spacesaver model), our cookbooks, and our pretty Le Creuset dutch ovens.

Issue #3: I hate this curvy thing that is above the sink.

Arthur is going to take the piece down, cut off the curvy part so it is straight, and put it back up. That was an easier fix than I thought it would be.

We picked out the sink and faucet below to replace the sink and ugly faucet.

You can't tell from the photo, but the handles say "hot" and "cold" on them.

Here are a couple more before photos of the kitchen to give you an idea of where we are starting from:
